How to Retire to a Tropical Paradise on a $500 Monthly Income
Yes. It is possible. Millions of Americans and Canadians are already in paradise waiting for new friends like you to arrive.
I'm not of retirement age yet. I'm enjoying sailing around the world with my family. But I get to meet a lot of great Americans who have retired in some really warm welcoming paradise locations.
It generally isn't polite to ask a person their income, but I overheard so many times that people were just living on their Social Security or some other retirement income that I just had to ask.
I knew it was cheap in the places where my family likes to travel. We generally spend around $1,500 per month if we rent a place. We spend around $800 per month in countries where we continue to live on our boat.
But I was amazed that it could be possible to retire on the following kinds of income:
a) Social Security alone.
b) Military pension.
c) Post office retirement.
d) Railroad conductor retirement on the Long Island railroad in New York.
e) Social Security Disability income.
f) 401K retirement.
Surely these people had been very smart with their investments are were earning more than the average amount from these sources; right?
I had to know, so I asked those who we had made friends with enough to be comfortable asking about finances.
I heard the following income levels:
$618 per month.
$498 per month.
$815 per month.
$545 per month.
These were just the normal retirement pay that these people earned from Social Security or retiring from the military or post office or whatever.
They were able to live quite well in countries where me and my family were spending around $1,500 per month when we were renting a place.
Some differences were obvious. They usually didn't have children since they were retired. That means they can rent a smaller place. In fact, we were usually pretty extravagant since things were so cheap. We rented a six bedroom, four bathroom beach house once with only two kids. In other places, we paid only $320 per month for a four bedroom, two bathroom house, so we knew we could get rent down to the level where it might be possible to live on a $500 per month retirement check.
Since we have parents and grandparents who are retired or will soon retire, we decided to research the options. We put together detailed information for five different countries that are all wonderful places to retire.
You can easily retire on $500 per month in any of these countries. All are friendly, safe, welcoming, have great weather and large ex-pat American populations where you can make friends with people who have the same values you have.
